Write some postcards with us! We are in one of the nonprofit tents at the farmers' market today.
Please join us!
Some of the largest properties in Montclair do not pay taxes. They pay PILOTs, payments in lieu of taxes, with 95% going to the Township, 5% to the county, and NOTHING to the schools. If theses properties paid taxes, over half would go to the schools. We will be tabling to raise awareness about this issue and invite our neighbors to write postcards to the Town Council asking that they send the schools their fair share of PILOTs—the share they would have received if PILOTs were taxes. We will do this at different locations around town every Saturday and at school and community events.
If you cannot join us at the farmer’s market, here are a few other ways you can stay involved:
What are PILOTs, and why do we want them? Please read all about it here:
Please sign our PILOTs to Schools petition if you haven't already. We are hoping to reach 2500 signatures. Can you help us get there?
Have you sent your postcards to the council? The kids draw on the postcard’s front, and the parents write a message on the back. Then you can mail your postcards, bring them to the council meeting, or ask us to bring them for you.
Please use this form to order your Postcards; we will drop them off at your doorstep!
Email the Montclair Township Council. Just yesterday Peter Yacobellis said he is not receiving many emails now that Mr. Poff was re-hired. Please help us show the Council that we are still here and we still demand that they share a fair share of all PILOTs with the school district. See their emails below. If you don’t know what to write, here is a simple template you can edit and personalize:
“Dear Mayor Spiller and Councilors,
I write to request that a resolution be added to the agenda for next week’s town council meeting that would begin the process of allocating PILOT revenue to the Montclair Public School District.
Sincerely,
XXXX
Montclair Resident”
